NCQMA Hosts 3rd Annual Carolina Fall Nationals
Salisbury, NC - The North Carolina Quarter Midget Association (NCQMA) hosted their third annual Carolina Fall Nationals (CFN) over Thanksgiving weekend. This year’s event had 300 entries from many parts of the country.
The excitement of the event started long before Thanksgiving when the online registration opened in September quickly filling to the maximum 300 entries within 48 hours. Not only were there many returning families, but there were many who planned to race with NCQMA for the first time.
The week began with the arrival of many families anxious to get practice track time as well as enjoy the many local attractions in the Salisbury – Charlotte area. Salisbury and Rowan County offer a variety of historical locations, as well as the popular shopping and NASCAR-racing related venues throughout the metropolitan Charlotte area.
The official start began Wednesday evening with the first round of safety and registration. Thanksgiving Day was pure fun for all who attended. NCQMA began with a pit crew competition followed by games and prizes for all the kids. The afternoon ended with a tasty Thanksgiving dinner catered by the speedway concessions. Thanksgiving evening continued with fueling, safety and registration, and ended with NCQMA presenting a movie on a big screen shown in the covered staging area. Of course, the featured movie was Cars.
Friday morning marked the start of the racing event with controlled practice, batch qualifying followed by lower mains. There were 57 races to complete by Saturday evening at 11:00 PM and things were well under way.
Saturday continued with lower mains followed by A mains. The A mains were completed just in time of the 11:00 PM curfew with little time to spare. Immediately following the A mains tech began. Finally, at 1:30 AM tech inspections and the trophy presentation was complete.
Some of the highlights of the weekend included NCQMA’s traditional presentation of the American flag and military flags. This year retiring driver, Kyle Resco, led the race cars proudly carrying the American flag. Another NCQMA retiring driver, Harrison Rhodes, along with returning participant, Bubba Mekel from Pennsylvania, displayed the military flags.
NCQMA also led the way in monitoring the tire regulations for NCQMA and QMA with an outside source performing tire inspections for all competitors who entered the pit area and staging area. Overall, this was positive and allowed a more even, competitive environment for all.
Several additions to the racing included a raffle table with many great items, a silent auction featuring an autographed driving suit from Jeff Burton, a delicious bake sale and CFN event shirts featuring driver names on the back.
After all was complete it was a weekend of family fun and excitement for all who attended, great weather, great friends and great racing! See you next year.
